brief

Part 1: FW**Thesis: **Faith is inevitable. Every claim relies on certain foundational premises which are asserted, only justified by faith. Science relies on belief in empiricism; philosophy relies on belief in good scholarship.

**The role of the ballot is to vote for the team with the best revolutionary religious affect. **

  1. Affect first: Affect is how communication produces certain responses in subjects; it is how desire is articulated between bodies.
  • Affect prior to policymaking: Policies are informed by and create an affect. Gun control was first informed by anti-black affect, desires to stop slave revolts, and continues to produce it through policies like highway stops. This means that not engaging with affective forces only leads to error replication. - Prior to debate: Procedural fairness assumes the debate space has distinct, competing subjectivities, which are only organized and coherent through affect. This means that affect comes before the rules of debate because affect is the thing that shapes the subjectivity of debaters and judges who make the rules in the first place.- Engagements with power must be critical: The Black Panthers were only successful because they challenged the state’s authority through a revolutionary affect, centering blackness, leading to self-armament and community solutions to state neglect.
  1. Religion is the framework that makes affect intelligible.
  • Creation myths: Creation myths are shared across distinct cultures and time periods, channeling a faith-based understanding of the universe. These religious mythos, affectively translated through oral tradition, are foundational worldviews, serving as the filter through which human reality was constructed and understood. - Religion filters deployment of affect: religion is culturally and contextually specific, meaning that religion becomes the vehicle through which affect is contextualized and deployed to a multiplicity of subjectivities, look to how the different strains of Buddhism communicates its religious affect tailored to various regions.- Our argument is not that people should adopt our religious doctrine but understand the ways in which religion filters and shapes affect. 3. Fiat is illusory and cannot solve: Fiat is predicated on a dystopian present which destroys our value to life in our current existence. This cedes agency to the state, making micropolitical change impossible.
  • Han is prior question: the affective spiritual suffering of Han is always a prior question to material conditions as everyone from the destitute to the wealthy experience it - Han is both individual and community. It permeates and surrounds us, from the top of government to the inner psyche, making it the most proximal impact in this round. Materiality does not resolve spiritual suffering: a study from the European Molecular Biology Organization found that evolution molded us to act on the apparition of happiness. Happiness has no correlation with material circumstances. - Depression: The GDP per capita and average life expectancy of Koreans have increased exponentially since the Korean War but depression and suicide rates are the highest in the OECD.- Lash Out: Bitter feelings of injustice will inevitably cause the externalization of blame and violent lash out. This means that spiritual suffering is the internal link to resolving material conditions.- Intersectional Violence: Han is described as the interconnections of classism, racism, sexism, colonialism, and cultural imperialism which oppressed individuals experience everyday. Han is the only impact that accounts for the multifaceted and intersectional nature of violence. - Turns Case: The cyclical paradox of Han produces endless injustices and limitless failure, ensuring that the impacts of the affirmative are eternally replicated. The AFF only perpetuates self-victimization and a never ending quest for vindictive retribution that dooms all action to violence. #### Alt:Fallen Leaves Unseen

Dry Out in the Yellow Sun

Others rise above

And glisten in gold

How unfair it must seem

These fallen leaves unseen.

The spring breeze

Drops them with ease

Leaves began to ponder

Who can do as they please?

Who is lifted and who is below

Our alternative is the enactment of the AFF’s plan, as an act of Han Pu Ri, a religious performance by spiritual leaders within community in order to invoke the first steps towards the reconciliation of spiritual suffering. Han Pu Ri means “disentanglement of Han” and originates from a Korean shamanistic tradition that gives voice to the restless feelings of Han.

Solvency:- Feminist Shamanism: Han Pu Ri is a shamanistic ritual that has its genealogy in pre colonial times that locates its roots within the power that spiritual women had in pre-colonized socialities. This means it locates its power within a spiritual understanding of women that is anti-essentialist in the sense that it refers not to a specific localized body, but rather the energy that connects all life. This specific ritual was re-articulated as a form of anti-colonial resistance and can be understood as the reading of poetry, insurrectionary actions, or reclamation formulated within this radical genealogy. - We interrogate the ghosts of Han that lie beneath the actions of the 1AC: contextualizing them within a community space through our alternative. This informs others of the nature of spiritual suffering as the first step of resolving Han and creates a new form of epistemological understanding. When Han is released towards healing rather than the retribution of the 1AC, this stops Han’s cyclical violence and bitter lash-out. - Spiritual Space: The Alt is an affective spiritual intervention that recodes the space outside of the secular cosmology, allowing us to understand how our suffering is interconnected through Han which is key to building coalitions. - Disruption: Religious doctrine channels an affective hierarchy that regulates affect towards a transcendental end point. The affirmation of the Han Pu Ri disrupts this, understanding affect as a fluid force that intersects the spiritual suffering of the oppressed. - Survival Strats: Look to how slaves in the South would use the affect of Christian faith as a method of liberatory escape, allowing them to meet in spiritual spaces to reclaim agency over their subjectivities captured away by chattel slavery. 4. PERM fails and is bad:

  • Distortions: Han is difficult to articulate and vocalize but universally felt by those who are oppressed. Without engaging with the traditional, cultural and religious roots of oppression, Han is likely to be distorted as it passes various cultural boundaries. - Footnoting: The PERM will always footnote the alternative because their action will always be deemed more legitimate or superior to faith. - Paradox of Tolerance: We have to be intolerant of intolerance, or else we justify the paradox of tolerance in which being tolerant of intolerance allows for fascist ideas like anti-blackness and colonialism to be accepted within society which then destroys tolerance because of their genocidal nature. That means any conceded link is a reason to reject the perm.
